So last night I took the boat out (ran perfect over the weekend)
It ran good last night but when I start the engine and put it in gear there is a squeeling coming from the engine. It sounds like a alt belt squeel.

I am going to replace the belt and clean up the pulley. But I have noticed on here that a bad battery may also cause some of this? Also, whats the deal with wing nuts on the battery? Is that bad? I do have wing nuts on the battery.

Thanks for the help.

A bad battery is not going to cause a squealing sound. Wingnuts are typical for marine batteries.

Its really easy to tell if its the belts. Open doghouse and listen to the pulleys. If the belt isn't bad (cracked, faded, brittle) i usually just squirt some belt dressing on it.

Check belt and also anything that runs on the belt. maybe something froze up and caused the squelling. It's easy to check. Battery has nothing to do with your problem.

I am fairly confident that it is a belt. It didn't do it all the time, got louder when I hit the throttle and didn't do it while crusing. Hopefully it's as simple as a belt.

A very wise man once said "lose the wingnuts, clean the connections and put regular nuts on there." You can;t get the wingnuts tight enough. Clean and tight with regular nuts.

I took off the wingnuts as well. Also, you can check the pully themselves. I have had a couple go out. But for the most part it would be the belts.

I will get rid of the wing nuts, can I just use some belt dressing? Can it really be that easy?

Ayuh,... Get rid of the wingnuts, 'n go to plain ole 6 sided nuts that are turned with a wrench...
SSteel if you wish,...

Belt dressing don't equal installin' New belts...

If the pulleys are Rusty, they'll need sandin', 'n paintin'...
Otherwise, installin' New belts will become a common practice for ya...

Could just be that it is not tight enough. So just check to make sure the belt is in good condition and tighten if necessary. If the belt is in good condition and it is tight enough then you may have a pulley that is frozen.

A 1-2 sec shot of WD 40 or the like,on the belts with the engine running, will instantly, tho temporarily, quite the belts, if it is, just the belts. At least you will know if its just the belt squealing against the pulley, or if its the bearings itself. If the wd 40 doesnt quite it down, next step is to remove your accessory belts, 1 at a time and start the engine BRIEFLY !!! You should be able to isolate which accessory, alt, PS steering pump, or god forbid the crankshaft [gulp] is makeing the noise...
