It's always something, did I ruin my transmission?

I was coming in from fishing about 11 miles out and everything was great until my engine revved like it came out of gear. I backed the throttle down and the prop started turning again. Long story short, I had to come in at idle speed, anything more than idle speed the transmission (or maybe something else) would start to slip.

I get to the dock and hit reverse to swing the stern around and the transmission went into reverse just fine. There was never any strange noises like clunks or squeals that would give me the impression that I totally blew the transmission.

I checked the engine coupling hoping that it was slipping but it was fine. I checked the dip stick for the transmission fluid.....and there was none! The dip stick was totally dry.

I'm not entirely sure the problem is the transmission but when I seen there was no transmission fluid in it my thought was it must be the transmission. Is it possible that the transmission was slipping because of low fluid? Or is it more likely that the transmission is damaged because of low fluid? I'm hoping and praying that when I refill the transmission fluid everything will work fine again.

Does anyone know what kind of transmission fluid it takes? I don't have a manual for the boat, the engine is a 454CI inboard built in 1989. Is there anything else I should be checking or does anyone know of any trouble shooting tips I can use to try to diagnose what the hell is wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hopefully you didn't wreck it. I'd have to know what kind of tranny you got to recommend anything now. There should be a tag on it someplace that say's velvet drive,or something, with serial numbers.....let us know.

As grub said were going to need the type a transmission you have. I will say most all of them are Borg Warner velvet drives and they take Dexron III or equivalent. Most use Dexron VI which is full synthetic and is III compliant. If you have a velvet drive you could also have a filter screen.

Ya know, not to rub salt in the wound, but those maintenance checks are a very good thing to do now and then

The fluid had to go somewhere so be sure to check for the leak.

The leak could be the oil cooler, that is if there is no fluid in the bilge.
