We're finishing painting a J-24 sailboat which will be powered by a 2 stroke Tohatsu 18 HP long shaft engine. This model revs 5200-5800 factory stated rpm. The standard delivered prop is a 3 blade 9 pitch prop which peforms excellent in light to medium aplications. Being a J-24 a heavy 1.5 ton sailboat without crew was wondering if it would be fine to go for a prop max for wot rpm to be at or around full wot numbers if that's possible playing with prop pitches.

A J-24 only achieves fast displacement speeds, but won't it be nice to count with full rpm in case you need them ? Should it be tached lightly loaded or with its 3 crew adult members ?

For that will need to wait untill the paint is done and the engine has ended its break in period before going wot lightly loaded moving such a weight.

If it helps any the 18 2 stroke at 2-3 hours break in suggests 1 minute of wot every 10 minutes,
3-10 hours suggests 2 minutes wot every 10 minutes. That should give plenty of time to evaluate the setup
So you don't have to waste 1/2 the season getting an idea what prop is needed.
