I am trying to trouble shoot my Trim Motor. Last year it started to only click when I pressed up or down and then after a couple of tries the drive would engage and go up and down. Now this year it just stopped working all together. No clicks no nothing when I hit the switch. So I downloaded the troubleshooting guide and got to the point of using the jumper wire. The trim motor works and the drive goes up and down when using the jumper wire. The trouble shooting guide just says when using the jumper wire the trim motor should work. It doesn't state what to do next if the jumper wire test works. So what is the problem? Is it the switch? Is it the solenoid? I am not the greatest when it comes electrical so I need a little help.

Thanks.

It does appears electricity may not be your strong suit, but need a bit more explanation then when I use a jumper it works. When power is applied to the Blue/Wht wire the up solenoid engages, and when power is applied to the Green/Wht wire the down solenoid engages. What are you jumping and is the 20amp fuse intact?

Just an FYI. J1171 is just a designation for a marine approved part. You will find it on the starter, alternator, ect.

remove the nuts holding the motor wires and buss bar to the solenoids.clean everythi8ng with a wire brush until you see clean copper, including the nuts.
reassemble and test. don't forget the ground connection too.

Thanks all... I ended up finding the red wire to the switch at the controls had corroded and became disconnected. So now the up/in works and the trailer button works fine. The down/out takes a couple of clicks before it will go down. What causes this?

Thanks.

Most likely corroded contacts in the switch

Thanks AD.....I will order a new one. I wasn't sure if it would be the pump motor or not.

Now don't just throw parts at it, you need to find out is it the contacts on the switch (in most cases) or maybe a bad wire connection. Break out the meter and find out

The pump motor wouldn't be intermittent in most cases, but the relay could along with wire and switch

I just went through this on my 1999 Sea Ray. Symptoms: the trim would go up and down a few times and then start clicking. Shut off power, wait.... Put power back on and trim would go up and down a few more times and start clicking.

Pump sounded like it was straining when working. First thought it was the solenoids so swapped those out, put everything back together and same symptoms. In the back of my mind it wasn't making sense to me that both the up and down stopped working at the same time.

Turned out it was the pump, the J1171 Marine Trim Pump. I believe the bushings inside were wearing so I took a hammer and lightly banged around the whole pump and....voila, pump now sounds like it has new life to it. I will be replacing the pump at some point, but after spending a few hours swapping out the solenoids I got a quick fix to the trim problem.

J1171 isn't a pump part number. It's a standard for anything electrical (pump motors, alternators, starter motors, circuit breakers, etc) that is to be using in a marine environment. You should not install anything electrical in a boat that does not carry the J1171 approved standard.
