Fired up an 72 Johnson 125hp and I noticed water coming from the spark plug area. After removing the spark plug wire & plug, I notice there's a gasket behind the plate. I'm only guessing that the gasket done went bad on me.. Am I correct in saying this? What is the technical name for the gasket? I want to order one over the internet. My brother-inlaw (who put the engine on my boat for me) don't beleive the water should be coming thru this area. Is he correct? Is this engine any good?

You should not have water there.

The plate you are referring to is the water jacket cover. There is ne on each head.

DJ,

I thought that would be weird, but I do.... You can see the cardboard of the gasket in the spark plug area. (If u look in the hole, the gasket seems skewed out of place. does the water come thru that area to keep the engine cool?

Magic,

You have a head gasket and a water jacket gasket. The spark plug should be no where near the head gasket, so lets rule that one out.

The water jacket comes very close to the spark plug. There is a lot of heat there. I think the gasket may have popped or was not installed correctly.

At this point, it's a nuisance because it keeps getting the plug wet. However, if it really pops, you'll have no way of knowing until the engine overheats.

It's a simple repair and the gasket is proabably less than $10.00.
