Hi All,
I am looking to possibly buy a J15RCIA for $400 including Fuel Tank and hose/bulb. Seller says it runs good (I haven't visited yet, but might this evening). Seller also indicates that Impeller was replaced recently. It appears to have been used mostly (or completely) in freshwater (vs. saltwater). Seem like a fair deal? Anything in particular to beware of and to watch out for on this year/model? I will probably check for spark (at least 1/4inch, and Blue color) and Compression (at least 80 psi) on both cylinders. Also I intend to loosen 6 machine screws to partially drop Lower Unit, checking that Drive Shaft is not frozen to Crankshaft (or do I have to disconnect the Shift Rod Connector p/n 303794 to be absolutely sure that the Driveshaft/Crankshaft are not frozen? I already have 2 "parts motors" with that condition...). Of course, if Impeller was changed recently, the Drive/Crankshafts should not be frozen.

Also, I see J15RCIS is 1981 model (CI indicates 1981). What is different on a J15RCIA vs. the J15RCIS?

Thanks for any input.

The "A" vs "S" indicate a mid-year engineering change was made. Could be as minor as a screw or seal or something bigger. Hard to tell without sitting down and studying the parts books.

Thanks F_R. Subsequently I found that 8th position in the Model Number indicates "ModelRun/Variation" so as you say it might be a minor change (somewhat like an Engineering Change Level). i.e. not enough of a Change to justify assigning a new Model Number.
Also I have made a note to check the Gearcase Oil for signs of leak (milkiness) AFTER I run it in a tank but before buying. I have made that mistake before too!
