J60TLETD - vro fuel pump

have a 93 johnson 60 hp J60TLETD with VRO. My shop manual shows that an air leak in the fuel pump diaphram can cause wet plugs, air getting into system that can cause difficult restarts, as well as dying at low throttle (fuel starvation symptoms). These exactly describe the 'ghosts' I've been chasing for the past year.

I'm confused with the VRO equipment since the manual discusses this system as a fuel and oil pump. My question is simple. Does the combo fuel and oil pump contain the diaphram that can get a pin hole in it resulting in air leak into the fuel system? In the manual, there's a picture of a fuel pump filter screen and such that is clear, but no picture of the VRO combo fuel/oil pump with a similar diaphram.

One other thing, are the low speed mixture screws suppose to be set at all the exact same turns? I noticed my top carburetor was opened slightly more than the bottom two which would be giving me a richer mixture; right? Could this also be causing my above symptoms? My top spark plug has always seemed to be more oily/wet than the bottom two.

any help would be appreciated.

p.s. I did a search on the VRO and read the outside link about the myths of the VRO and also viewed that diagram as well. I'm trying to figure out if my pump contains a diaphram that could have developed a pinhole causing the problems listed above.

Yes it does. There's a hose that moves alternating crankcase pulses that drives the pump. The pulses act on the diaphragm which has gas on the other side. There is another diaphragm between the oil and gas which also responds to the pulses transmittted by the gasoline. The gas chamber is 50 times (actually 60 I think) larger than the oil chamber which delivers the appropriate ratio. If the diaphragm has a hole or tear, that hose will be wet with gas and the cylinder that drives the pulses will run rich.

I've pasted a link to an article about VRO pumps below...might help you get a better picture of what's going on inside the pump.

On the issue of all needles being set the same....no...not neccessarily. You have to adjust each individually, sometimes doing the adjusting a couple times, until the engine runs at the best low end idle.

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html

A low speed idle problem can be hard to diagnos...can be fuel...air...fuel supply...ignition or a poor sync and link.

In your case, I would make sure all other factors are good....engine temp, compression, fuel....then reset the idle needles. More often than not...an engine equiped with low end needles are not set right.

Re: J60TLETD - vro fuel pump

here's what i've checked so far. compression is 130, 125, 127 so I think I'm good there. I recently replaced fuel line and primer bulb with OMC brand. also replaced fuel filter. when running on muffs or in water, boat starts and runs fine. However after turning off and sitting for approximately 20 minutes, when I restart, she'll fire right up, but then die. will not restart without priming engine. bulb is a little soft, but fuel filter is filled with fuel. After manual reading and finding symptoms related to tear in diaphram, I'm leaning towards either that. Question: is it the fuel/oil pump on the vro located directly behind the air silencer? It looks like it's difficult to access. Not the one screw job that appears in the manual. However, I do realize the manual shows a non-VRO fuel pump.

also, i took a sample of both fuel and oil to check for water or sediment. both were fine.

as far as the low speed idle problem, if i'm on the water, should i have someone drive and sit on the back with my screwdriver making incremental changes (1/12th as stated in manual) to the low speed mixture screw? if so, glad it's getting summertime, because i imagine i'll end up in the drink, if you know what I mean.

thoughts? if fuel is holding in the filter, then is that pointing me towards the fuel pump? all lines look good, no fuel leaking anywhere.

Re: J60TLETD - vro fuel pump

one other thing i forgot to mention, i read about feeling the fuel/oil pump for the steady thump (i think i read if it's beating fast, then it's a fuel problem). anyway, i do feel a very steady and slow click or beat. i don't know if that adds anything to my diagnosis, but the pump is not pumping fast.
