J6rcrm will shutdown after running for a short time

OK guys this is my first boat and motor so I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, but I picked up a j6rcrm and a boat from a buddy of mine that's been sitting for quite sometime. I put it in a pond yesterday and it fired right up after about 3 pulls but it died shortly after. Same thing over and over. Even if I left it in neutral. I could be mistaken but I don't think it's a carb issue. He ran all the gas out last time it was ran in 2016 and it seems to want to run even at idle until it just shuts off. Any ideas? It'll run for about 2 or 3 minutes.

What happens when you operate the manual fuel pump?----I also recommend that you install a new water pump impeller.-----Replace O-rings in fuel line connecters.

did you open up the vent on the fuel tank... try torun with the cap off see if it helps. if yes fix/open the vent

the carb is the grand child of older carb found all over the OMC world
it was run dry before storage but it surely needs a good clean . top needle is the low speed circuit and easy to clog . under the dime size plug #10 are 3 VERY small holes to drip fuel in the carb for LS operation .

if you do a full overall remove the plug#10 (Drill a small hole and pry it off..do not drill to deep !!! just the plug) , top needle. high speed jet #24 and clean everything and blow dry. there is a very narrow side feeder to the top idle cct. make certain it passes carb cleaner from the side to the top drip chamber .. get a carb kit and reinstall the dime plug and tap it back with a firm tap with a flat punch... not to hard !
btw open up the fuel pump cover check the screen for filt..clean it and reinstall

I ran with an without cap thinking the same thing but it didn't change anything. I plan to do a carb rebuild soon also. So I'll definitely do that. Thanks for the info on the #10 plug

Hadn't tried the primer bulb while running. How do I go about taking the lower unit off to check water pump and impeller? How would I check them to see if they are operational?

Just 3 screws, 2 above the prop.----And one from top at the front.----Just install a new impeller.------That motor does not have a WARNING system or an overheat SHUTDOWN feature.-----It would run till it was too late and major damage is done.

OK guys I put a new fuel pump on it and cleaned the carb along with trying a different priming bulb and now it purrs like a kitten. Ran up and down the lake yesterday several times with no stalls and it'll crank first pull everytime after its warmed up. Couldn't have ever wished for a better deal on my first boat. Got the motor boat and trailer all for 300! Gonna make a lot of memories out on the water very soon

Great feedback thanks

..don't skimp on the impeller change and check the GC oil for water contamination.....at least change the oil mid season if you have a bit of water intrusion & don't feel like resealing the GC...if it leaks...

pull the prop check for monofilament !! it can spiral inside and ruin the seal on the prop shaft !!
you got yourself a great deal .... probably all worth $750-$1500 minimum (post pictures if any)

don't forget to service the bearings on the trailer, check out the lights & wiring

Gonna do the impeller change here in a few weeks. Thanks for info on the prop I'll do that here in a little while if it warms up today or I'll do it later in the week. What kind of propeller do I need if I was to change it out? This one has a few dings in it and I was considering changing so I figure I ought to if I'm gonna have it off anyway.
I know this question is gonna sound stupid but I don't know about boats really so how do I know if I'm trimming it too high or too low?

Smaller boats have a tendency to raise the bow (front) due to the weight on the backend + motor etc.. so tuck in the motor. If the bow is high and you can't see where you are heading you will know !
small prop nicks can be filed away ... at trolling/fishing speeds it wont matter much .

try to keep filing at a minimum and spread it around to balance the prop. Some gouges can be filled in with JB aluminum weld epoxy and sanded back to shape. Prop repair shops can fix just about anything but cost may be prohibitive compared to just buying a new one.
I usually repaint the prop to know if it rubbed on anything (aka sand)
you can keep it as a spare and buy a new one in case you ever scrape bottom rocks . Check the prop for markings or search the Internet or.. visit a dealer $$. for the new one.
Amazon may have them cheaper

p.s. first boat means ..buy a new personnal floation device ...buy & wear one ! all the time
