I'm dubious of any advantage you'd gain using anything smaller than a V-6 outboard. If you gained any speed, it wouldn't be much. If you operate shallow water a lot, then a powered jackplate could help. Otherwise if you're looking for a performance improvement, I think you'd be disappointed. Steering cable considerations almost always are overlooked and almost always make it a far more difficult job than expected.
