I am waiting on delivery of a new tritoon, excited! It's a 23' Crest ll cp3 w/ new 2012-250hp Optimax Pro XS ,underskined, tilt /trim,lifting strakes on both sides of 26"center tube, inside 25"outer tubes. Our location requires some slow, extremely shallow water passages [knee deep] rocky bottom, also deep water Hi speed cruising. My question is would I benefit from a Jackplate? Pros-Cons?

Jack Plate aside, how much does the water level fluctuate on your lake? Knee deep is extremely dangerous at any speed for both you and your boat. I hit a rock last year (in my old G3) in 2.3 feet of water at just over idle and had to replace the lower unit and re-weld the transom. You will need to be extremely careful with weight distribution on the pontoon. Put more people toward the front of the boat and trim the motor up. Good luck.

Re: Jackplate

I don't think a jackplate is necessary. When I'm in really shallow water, I just trim way up and the skeg / prop are higher than the keel on the center tube. But, I'm talking idle speed only and sandy / muddy bottoms. Good luck !!! That Crest ought to fly. Post some pics when you can. Welcome to the forum.

P.S.- As far as high speed cruising, these barges don't respond like Bass boats to jack plate trim adjustments. I believe it would be a waste of money.

Phew...I can't imagine boating like that in shallow, rocky bottoms. It gets like that where we boat, but very soft sand. Just hitting a stump can ruin your week....rocks....eek.

Best solution for you is to know your lake inside and out.

We also have to deal with water levels that can move up or down by 10 feet. Pain in the arse.....but I am very familiar with where we boat. Many of the V shape guys are envious of us tooners as it is really hard to get stuck or break anything in shallow water for us with sand.
