I have a 24' Skipjack Flybridge with carburated VP 5.7L mated to a DP-A sterndrive. All wood on the boat is termite eaten or rotted (transom, deck, stringers, etc.). Engine is very low hours fresh water cooled and fires, even looks like it hasn't seen salt yet. Outdrive seems to be in good condition. So mechanical is good, but the boat needs to be rebuilt.

For the new layout I am considering a short jackshaft to move the engine forward and free up the transom for a better sport fishing layout/ weight distribution.

Does anyone have a point of contact to start asking about the parts needed to fit a jackshaft(ie volvo penta kit or aquadrive) like used on the True World, Albemarle, or Carolina Classic boats?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Jackshaft conversion

You don't say where you are located, but you might want to talk to Layton Custom Boatworks. I believe they are in North Carolina.
Others have said they know jackshafts better than just about anybody.

Sounds like a great project!
Good luck

I hope so too! I've been asked about jackshaft installations and all I can do is give dumb looks.

Re: Jackshaft conversion

Thanks for the reference material. I will get some pics up. Spent the last couple of days accumulating my tools together to remove the engine and drive. Also been soaking all the bolts. Just got the leg off after work today. Not much trouble using a couple tie straps to take the weight while I pulled it off. So far everything look like new with some weathering. Tomorrow I will prep the engine for removal (mark/ remove wires and hoses, loosen fasteners, check out hardware for the engine lift). Sunday I should get the engine out and really see what this project has in store.
