Obtaining and reman engine from Jasper (IN) or Rapido (FL) would depend on where you live. To start off with what is the status of your boat and current engine? If your going for a reman then maybe think of having yours rebuilt locally for a reputable shop. The issue with buying one from an area you don't live in, is if you have a problem you need to ship the engine back to have it looked at. The same issue also happens with Merc, but at least you only need to take it to a local Merc dealer.

If the engine is old enough you may need to replace the exhaust and this could cause you to look at a new GM crate motor. Give us a bit more info and we have all kinds of opinions

Re: jasper vs rapido

I live about an hour and a half away from Jasper IN so that is one reason why i would pay more for a Jasper. I bought the Sea Ray without a motor and bought another donor boat to use its motor. After tearing that motor down the block wasn't worth rebuilding because someone had already bored it .40 over. Now im back to square one. The original motor is a mercruiser or ford 302 with an 888 outdrive.

I didnt think you could switch a Ford/mercruiser to a GM? I would rather have a 350 in it but dont want to switch outdrives.

Thanks!

Hope someone link Bondo will come in, but the drive will fit either GM or Ford. The transom could be an issue (need expert here) but that is just how the engine mounts. Your 302 is not worth the trouble to rebuild, wonder if your drive is in the same issue. You currently have a 40 year old boat and you want to put another complete drive in it. You can get a new 5.0 GM engine long block for 3K. Put that together with everything else you would need will probably put you in the 5-6K by the time your done. You can find a decent 19 foot boat for 3 to 5K and it will be running.

If you really want to go the route I would go Jasper, not that I like them, but because they are close to you. If there is warranty work at least their near by. Before you do look over the rest of what you have. Have the drive inspected to see if it is good. Check your exhaust, manifolds and elbows, along with the y-pipe. Make sure you know all that will be needed to get it in the water.

Re: jasper vs rapido

I currently have two 888 outdrives and two sets of exhaust manifolds so going back to ford would be easier and cheaper way to go i think. But i know what you mean alldodge. I should have probably went that route instead of what im doing now . What about using all my marine accessories and putting them on a used but running automotive engine?

You do know the Mercruiser 888 isn't a true 302. Its a 302 block with 351 heads and 351 cam.

I can help you out if you don't mind buying used. If you want new/rebuilt, I would spend the money at Michigan Motorz. Send me a PM for details.

Re: jasper vs rapido

I got a 4.3 from Rapido delivered today. One difference between Jasper and Rapido is that Raul at Rapido will "customize" your engine. I had him put the heart-shaped Vortec heads on a earlier block. They'll change pistons and cams and other stuff at very reasonable prices. Packaging was very well done and it arrived super clean. $1600 (and no core charge) including dropping in my garage at the house!

Another advantage, if you are in the north where it's cold, Raul at Rapido can be talked into starting your warranty with warm weather which can add several months to the one year warranty.

I'll have to call Raul and get another couple months on my warranty! Thanks Bubba
