"Java Update" notices...

The ever-increasing frequency of the "Update Java" notices has been getting on my nerves and been more and more disruptive over the last few months.

Now today I have one that pops up when I log onto my brokerage account page and won't relinquish that page. Every time I reload all I get is a flash of the desired page, and the Java notice immediately covers it. Even when I relent and accept the download file, the popup remains. So now the popups have actually made my computer useless in at least one case.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Has anyone defeated it? What utility would I lose if I disabled or uninstalled Java?

If you are using firefox, you can disable java by going to tools>options>content>and un checking the box that says enable javascript, you also have an advanced button next to it, that you can configure different things.

Another thing you can do, is go to windows programs and uninstall java runtime, which is what I have done now take into account, Java and Javascript are not one in the same, I can still allow Javascript with out having Java runtime installed. This would be under control panel and then install/uninstall programs, I just checked mine again and I don't even have Java installed on my machine. Take into account I am running windows 8, I know on my XP machine, it keeps giving me update notices, so I uninstalled it on that machine as well.

Now if you want to update, you should uninstall all previous java updates and then install the new one.

Yeah, I get that update all the time too. It will never update in FireFox, however. I just went in, as MT suggested, and un-enabled it.

I too had the annoying update popping up way to often, so I unistalled the runtime environment.

Just a heads up, disabling JavaScript in your browser will break a lot of the forum functions.

I think I just discovered that. I had to go re-enable it to even make this post. It never dawned on me that that was the problem. Thanks!

But what to do about all the failed attempts to update it? I am using FireFox.

I uninstalled the run time environment, I keep javascript enabled, they are not the same, Java runs on your local machine, Javascript runs in a browser and not on your machine, the Javascript code is actually embedded on the website you are viewing.

Java is actually installed on your computer.

After the security issues with Java were publizied, I turned it off on all my home computers. Hasn't been an issue for me yet.

Well I took the advice given above and disabled runtime, uninstalled javascript and reinstalled the latest version. It appears that I'm out of trouble - for the moment at least.

What a madhouse this entire Microsoft merry-go-round can be.

Thanks guys. Once again, you really helped.

Generator, Microsoft had nothing to do with Java or Java script, in fact when it first started appearing, they didn't want to support it and tried real hard to quash it. So don't blame Microsoft for this one, they are guilty of enough stuff, but I will stand up for them on the Java mess.

It was a programer named James Gosling that invented the language and if I remember correctly it is Sun Micro systems that owns or administers it now.

What I hate with the update is that I forget to unclick the stupid Ask Toolbar install and have to go back and get rid of it.

Java is needed for a lot of stuff including apps at my work so it is a necessary evil.
