Howdy, Clanton.<br /><br />The 16SL was Whaler's Edsel. Terrible handling and riding. One of the first attempts in 20 years to market a non-Dougherty design.<br /><br />It is a dual console deep Vee. I have a '92 catalog if you need a pic.

It is a good looking boat. But that is about the only thing that it is good at <br /><br />If the price is right and you only plan to use it in lakes rivers and other protected whaters it might be ok.<br /><br />11

I would prefer it to a Bayliner for a freshwater-only boat, but not to a Tracker.

OK I passed on the 16sl,<br /><br />What about a 17 Dauntless with duel console?<br /><br />My brother has a Bayliner with twin 125 Forces, Its old, junky, but will make about 47 mph GPS and does not leak. We have solved all of the engine problems, except the tilt and trim.

Ahoy Clanton.<br /><br />A key to selecting a real winner among Boston Whalers is the length of the model run and what it was replaced by.<br /><br />By that measure the Montauk 17 (1976-2002) and the first and second generation Outrages (with the classic Whaler "smirk" at the bow) from 1970 to 1992 are big winners.<br /><br />The first generation of Dauntlesses are not. The 13, 14, 15 and 17 Dauntlesses are just good boats, not great. They were quickly replaced by the 16, 18 and 20. <br /><br />My all time favorite Whaler is the Montauk. Light, fast, easily handled, trailered, maintained and fueled. My current flagship is a '80 Montauk. I will probably never replace her.<br /><br />If I lived at or near Crystal River I would probably go for a classic Outrage 18. A lot more boat than the Montauk, but still light, fast, etc for a 18.5' offshore boat. I have had 2 of those and many consider it the best small CC ever made.<br /><br />Good luck.
