Re: Jeep cherokee

CPS switch bad maybe, crankcase position switch located on driver side of bell housing, if it is a 4.0 motor, it is a pain in *** to replace but do-able with a 1/4 socket drive can get at it from under truck, assuming starter is good and cranking 1 hope this helps

Re: Jeep cherokee

Sounds like the neutral start switch. Try putting it in neutral.

Re: Jeep cherokee

Does it just not turn over but the lights and stuff works? If that's the case there's a 99% chance it's the neutral start switch. Mine stops sometimes in neutral or park. Move the shifter back and forth like 10 times and make sure it really clicks into gear and try it. I had to wire a switch around mine.

We don't have a model year.
The later models have a PDC (Power Distribution Center) with all the fused circuits and the starter relay.

Might want to get real basic.....check your battery cables and ground connection.

Any neutral safety switch location is model year dependent also.

Even more proof it's the NSS. It will come and go completely randomly. Mine usually won't restart if I stop for something quickly - like gas. Sometimes it will refuse to start at all for days. Sometimes it goes weeks without ever having a problem. My old Cherokee did something similar too. I like having a button rather than trying to clean/replace the NSS because it works kind of like a kill switch. Plus it's less work. :)

Re: Jeep cherokee

Pull the connector off the switch [NSS] and jump the leads of the connector with a paper clip or wire,But BEWARE it will start in any gear

Re: Jeep cherokee

The NSS is on the side of the tranny if this is an automatic and the grease gets dried up in there and the contacts get fried, crudded up and lose connection and that is why it sometimes starts and sometimes don't.
Could also explain why it will start after it gets warm out.
Just enough heat to let the contacts penetrate through the old grease.

Yep. I think I used 16 gauge. Whenever you push the button the starter turns over.

I used a big red button that says "EJECT". You wouldn't believe how many people believe it and get scared when I push it and it starts making noise. :D
