Im looking into buying a boat on a double axle trailer that weighs 5100 pounds (25ft pennyan)My 000 grand cherokee is rated for 5000 with the inline 6. The boat launch is a mile and a half down the street.I just want to be able to pull it that far and put it in and out. Im thinking , that short distance, 4 whell drive low wont be a hassle. What u guys think? With trailer and fully loaded its probally going to tip over 5500pnds.

ordinarily, I wouldnt do it, but 1 1/2 miles isnt far at all. there are far worse off people out there, and those things have always had a decent towing reputation as far as i know. I would think it would be fine. only thing is if its a public or private road, the legality issue would come into play IF you ever got pulled over. but they would have to be pretty damn picky to get u for that.

That tow rating probably has alot to do with the kinda weak for the application 42RE trans that the 4.0 had behind it.
The V8 WJ was able to tow 6500, it had a much better 45RE trans.
Seems fine for that short trek.

Re: Jeep Grand 5500?

He didn't say what year Grand Cherokee, didn't some of the early models come with an AW4 trans? The same box that was in the smaller Cherokee. They used that until mid 1993 or so.

I'd probably have to say if that was the case, he's a little better off than having the 42RE or A500 trans.
Having had both the V8 and 4.0L versions of that vehicle in the earlier versions, I'd have to say he may be better off with the 4.0L in that it makes good low end torque. I also owned an earlier plain Cherokee with the 4.0L, and must say it ran quite well and I had no issues towing with that truck at all. I had towed 4500lbs quite regularly with that truck, back in 1988-89.

The AW 4 had a pretty good reputation and was also the same trans that was used in some Toyota 4x4 trucks back then. It was an expensive trans to overhaul though compared to the US built 42RE and 44RE trans.

4WD Low range ONLY on a straight pull out of the water. You will break things if you try that on the trip to and from the ramp. It's 2WD only on the road.

thats 5100 lbs without any of your gear and no passengers in the vehicle? for such a short distance I would look for a rusty old 3/4 ton truck. doesnt need to be pretty, just start and pull the trailer. A lot can happen in a mile and a half.....

My jeep has an in line 6 and could probably pull your boat up a cliff in Alaska in February. V8 and in line 6 jeeps have the same frame and suspension. As long as your hitch is rated for the load and the trailer brakes are good, you should have no issue with that distance. 4WD to get you out of the water and 2WD from there.

Re: Jeep Grand 5500?

Well I own SSV190 1993 Glastron that weight over 1,200 pounds plus galvanized trailer, approx reach 2,00 pounds, I pull all this with my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2WD 6Cilinders 4.0L. I do not have any trouble pulling my boat for a trip of 3 hours from home. The truck handle this weight very well, there is no changes in temp, or oil presure. Anyway the trick here is to pull the boat with the OVERDRIVE OFF.

Hope this helps

Re: Jeep Grand 5500?

You will be fine for short trips.. I have a 99 grand with a V8 and 4x4 but my boat is only around 2000lbs and mine is rated for 6500. I would start slowly and if you tow enough look into installing a tranny cooler. The main reason your truck is rated lower is the Dana 35 vs dana 44 rear end and the weaker tranny. so make sure you maintain these things...
