I watch a lot of TV. Until recently I watched little fictional drama; mostly nonfiction and some British comedy.

Now I suddenly discover that lead characters in many popular shows are insufferable jerks.

NCIS: The DiNozzo character is a bully and a terrible jerk. If he worked for me it wouldn't last two days before I either beat him senseless or threw him out an upper story window (or both). Gibbs can be insensitive, too.

House: Another jerk seriously distorts how a good physician treats colleagues and patients.

Doc Martin: Another bad, bad example of physician PR.

None of those characters would survive a week in the real world, and I haven't even looked at other drama and crime shows.

Are young people likely to see them as role models??

My new hero is Watson ......... the IBM computer that kicked butt on Jeopardy.

The wife and I were discussing how wonderful it would be to "always solve a crime"...... "Always find the cure"..... have "unlimited resources to work with" "Bad guys always go to jail"

Television is terrible and paints a huge fantasy world. In today's society we know the truth. Plea deals are very common place, people usually get away with crimes or suffer very light punishment, sex offender's should be castrated, thieves should have one hand and one foot removed, domestic violence offender's should be beaten daily and in public. Capitol punishment should be carried out within 10 minutes of a conviction.

The TV new's is slanted and performed for ratings and the benefit of the sponsor's.

OMG and do not start me ranting about the amount of commercials per show.

JB, it's TV, it's not reality, it's an escape from reality. Regarding NCIS, if you haven't watched much in the last 7 years, you just won't get it.

Good parents are the only role models, kid's can really count on.

Who want to watch characters on TV, who are as boring and inane, as the viewer's?

Real life stinks! ;)

I can't stand the "crime" shows on TV. It is nothing like real police work goes, which probably only bugs me lol. I can't even stand to watch them for 5 mins. The only show I like, which I think is the most true to life police show, is Southland.

I just get on iBoats all the time too!

I wonder if JB dislikes Dinozzo because he is often rude to Ziva...we know JB has a soft spot for her....;):D

Unfortunately young people see many role models on tv. Just look at the teenagers walking around with pants almost at their knee's, they learned this on MTV.

We have over 200 channels on Directv and we have a hard time finding something to watch. We never watch network primetime fictional drama's. Their have been a few on the cable channels in recent years that were good, but they are few and far between.

I long for the days of Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue, Wonder Years, Thirty Something and Northern Exposure. At least their are still Seinfeld and Andy Griffith reruns on!

Bob, if your planning on asking our "fearless leader to appoint you head of the FCC you've got my vote. :D

It bugs me more when he bullies McGee. Ziva always has that air of barely contained terminal violence. And yes, I do admire her character and find Cote de Pablo hot, hot, hot. Hell of a note; I have grandchildren older than her. :(

:mad:It's not only the TV JB.

Actually when I was in the army, I worked with quite a few people that acted like the main characters in NCIS! Fortunately, I out ranked them!

And yes Bob, the TV commercials have got way out of hand, and to think I pay 65 bucks a month so they can try and sell me something!!!

VERY simple solution to this, stop watching TV. I watch about 3-5 hours a week, less in the summer.
I'm convinced that the more I watch, the dumber I get.

Agreed, and our children are watching this stuff. If we don't do something we could end up raising a nation of idiots. It seems that we have plenty of people on TV who are famous for nothing more than being famous.

My favorite show on TV is something call "The Soup". It's a comedy show that basically makes fun of all of the worst stuff that's been on TV during the past week.

No kidding! I spend too much time actually doing things than watching TV.

I get a kick out of people that complain about Krap that's on TV yet continue to watch it. They put an on/off button on the remote for a reason.

What some consider bulling may be considered playful fun by others. At our monthly board meetings you check your ego at the door and nothing is off limits. Wife, kids, dog, nothing is off limits. Ten guys that would do anything for the other guy when things get tough. Absolutely no "respect" otherwise. :D

I agree. Wearing pants down around your knees is much worst than my generation. There isn't anything wrong with having hair down to your belt, inserts sewn into the bottoms of your bell bottoms to make them bigger, a shocking pink shirt open to your belly button, a beard by age 16 and being stoned on whatever 7 days a week.

Andy Griffin would have been proud.

I'm right there with ya. Deadliest Catch, Swamp Loggers, Ax Men, American Pickers, Pawn Stars and yes, the original "reality" show...... Survivor....... Don't like dramas(wife does). I figure there's too much drama in real life as it is, don't want to watch it on tv too. I like the no-brainer shows.

I long for the days of Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue, Wonder Years, Thirty Something and Northern Exposure. At least their are still Seinfeld and Andy Griffith reruns on!

:D

Wonder Years is being run on The Hub, along with Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Doogie Howser(never watched it when it 1st came out, started watching it now w/14 year old daughter), etc.....

I think kids will use tv "stars", or any other celeb for that matter, as role models only if parents let them. Parenting doesn't stop when the tv goes on......
