Joe Reeves-Carb Rebuild Question

Joe,
I have a 1990 30 HP rope start tiller Johnson. I am having a problem with fuel leaking into and collecting in the lower engine cover, (about 2 tbs. by the end of the day). This is my third season, and I have decided to rebuild the carb.
I have an OMC service manual. In the manual they refer to a sealer called Gasoila (OMC p/n 200763) to be used on the calibration pocket core plug.
There also are instructions to fill the idle circuit with isopropyl alcohol and check for leaks between the emulsion pick up tube and the carb body. A sealer called OMC ULTRA LOCK should be used at point “A”.
They also recommend the use of a float setting gauge (OMC p/n 324891) which I don’t have.
My questions are:
1. Are there any substitutes for the two sealers that would be available at NAPA?
2. Would you know the dimension on the float gauge?

Re: Joe Reeves-Carb Rebuild Question

It's very unlikely that you'll need the alcohol or Ultra Lock (OMC goes overboard at times with their instructions). The gasoila might be needed, but only if you remove the core plug(s).

I've installed many core plugs which sealed perfectly (notice there is no gasoila on the factory core plugs?)

However, all of the above should be available at NAPA, but if not, I'm sure they stock the identical item under a different name.

The float level..... Simply hold the carb upside down, then adjust it so that the free end, when viewed from the side, is ever so slightly higher (off level) than the hinge pin end. Then when viewed from the end, simply make sure it isn't cocked. The gauge isn't needed.
