Please sir:
I am looking for a well informed person on outboard motors.
My 140 johnson developed a knock and I am debating "should I have it rebuilt or buy a used engine".I am retired and on a fixed income so I have a few questions. On my 140 it would take $20.00 a day to be out fishing.I like to fish every day or 5 days a week and stay home the weekend. What engine do you recomend? Is there a place where a guy can purchase an engine and pay monthly? mean while what is your opinion of a 1968 125 hp merc? The johnson rebuild is around 1600.00.Please advise
Your Friend
Danner

Danner.... I can't advise you as to what engine to purchase. However I am abviously partial to the Evinrude/Johnson outboard line.

I know absolutely nothing about the Mercury line and cannot advise you in that area.

Purchasing a engine and making monthly payments can be arranged through any respectable dealership via regular monthly bank payments.

The $1600 quoted is an average price for the 140hp overhaul if it's done properly by a knowledgeable technician.

I understand and relate to the fixed income situation, however..... from what you say, you're spending approximately $400 per month just to be fishing. That's out of my range. A little triming of that arrangement could be making those new outboard monthly payments. Good luck.
