Johnnyrude 2HP waterpump swap?

I've got a '79 Evinrude 2HP that I bought at a swap meet that I'm still struggling with. Previously I asked for (and got) help here with carb problems. Carb issues now seem to be over. Now it runs fine for about 10 minutes, then slows and stops. Appears to be overheating, as the powerhead was too hot to touch when it stalled when I ran it yesterday. Awhile back just after I bought the motor, I went to the dealer to get a new carb kit, I also wanted to buy a new WP impeller in case I had to change that too. Well, the part numbers didn't match, and the microfiche diagram picture of the proper pump housing wasn't anything like mine. A little detective work by the parts mgr found out that I have 2HP with the waterpump for a 4HP (?). Dealer couldn't source a whole new 2HP WP. I searched the web and I didn't find a source either. Dealer told me that these OMC 2HP's were notorious for overheating, anyway.

Question: Is my problem the fact that some bozo swapped in a non-standard WP? Or was this swap something that knowledgeable mechanics did and it worked, so my problem is elsewhere? Or is the overheating problem just a design flaw, and I have to live with a motor that only runs a few minutes? I'm afraid to use it with the constant overheating for fear of doing damage. (Right now everything else is fine.)

Re: Johnnyrude 2HP waterpump swap?

First off you need to drop the l/u and check the condition of the w/p, impeller, etc.

Also the part# for the water pump repair kit is the same for the 2hp as the 4hp so its unlikely this would have anything to do with the problem.

BMC P/N 0387362, about $22.00
