Sorry guys but I came from the dark side of the force, being a Merc guy. ;)

I've rebuilt a few of them over the years but i'm completely unfamiliar with the Johnson/Evinrude and i've been offered a 1992 Johnson 120hp that, the guy said (i haven't seen it yet) ?throw a bearing and punctured the crankcase?. He's asking 500$ but i'm pretty sure I can get it for 400$.

So, my questions are, are theses reliable engine? And is it worth it? I figure that, for 400$, if nothing else i can at least part it out (L/U, PTT, cables, SS prop, etc.) if the damages were too extensive.

What do you think?

Nothing wrong with mercs, they make good anchors.
On to your question, if the power head is the only thing wrong, search out some salvage yards and see if used parts are available. If parts are available and reasonably priced, it might not be a bad deal.

personally I would not go over 200.00
when buying a blown engine , buy it with the idea of worse case senario
If in 3 months you can sell major componets for 500.00, great, but probably not
I currently have a 140 I am parting out and only paid 100.00 including a S.S. prop
That is cheap, but it can be done
