I believe the Johnson 10 hp outboards were made until 1963 (white cowl, red "Johnson" on sides with blue & red seahorse emblim). Is that correct? All I have is a picture and a description. I'm trying to get the model number.

Anyone know the weight of the 10hp? The weight of a 1956 5.5hp Johnson, for comparison?

What year did Johnson switch from a dual-line fuel hose and pressurized tank to the single-line hose?

I have read several posts on various forums that the latter Johnson 10HP had a "weak lower unit"? Can someone expand on that a bit?

Any specifications that anyone can provide would be helpful.

Thanks,

Re: Johnson 10hp info please

Bill, the QD series Johnsons were from 1949 to 1963. The 1949 model was a QD10, each year afterwards the QD # increases such as QD11 WAS 1950, QD 12 was 1951 etc. The last year of the pressure tank was 1959, the last year of the metal engine cover was 1958. It is indeed true that some of the QD'S had "weak" lower units but that was the 1958 to 1963 models only. The clutch dog and forward gear wore out prematurely, they would "pop out of gear." Unfortunately, for the 58 to 63 models, no other models shared those components. If you are patient with a high speed Dremel tool you can sometimes re-work the gear and or clutch dog and make them work. Or, a machine shop may be able to do it for you. Cheers, Bruce :)

Bigboystoys4u,
You seem to know whats up but I thought the single hose syatem started on smaller motors in 1961.Im just going by my best recollection so
could very well be wrong.

Steelspike, and all: Johnson began to use a fuel pump on models CD, QD and FD in 1962. According to the Johnson service manual for the 1962 and up models, "The familiar pressurized fuel system has been replaced by a fuel pump, a non-pressurized tank and obviously a 'single' fuel line with coupling assembly."..and thanks, bigboystoys4u with your info about metal covers. After 1958, I think the breed lost it's unique design character in favor of the "loaf of bread" look.

Re: Johnson 10hp info please

Here is some further clarification regarding fuel pumps and pressure tanks: The 5.5, 10, and 18 hp motors all went to fuel pumps in 1960. However, the 35 hp motors went to fuel pumps in 1958. The only other exception to this are the Gale products line. They had fuel pumps much earlier, but I am not sure of the exact date. :)

I can attest to the weaker lower units on the >58 engines, even the castings were inferior in my opinion. The 57 was the last year to have the strong lower of the QD series.
