Hello, I've been reading these post for many years now and now I am finally writing my first one I need help trying to figure out what year my Johnson 10hp is. I purchased it about 8 years ago from a mechanic who rebuilt it and wanted to get rid of it. I have had ZERO problems with it since then but unfortunately I now have a leak in the lower unit and need to change the seals. I have searched everywhere on the web and cannot find anything. The only one that I saw that may be a match would be a 1963 but the cowl is different than mine. Mine does not have any labels or numbers to identify it. They must have been removed by the previous owner.
I appreciate any information or advice that anyone can share with. My 5 year son sees the boat just sitting in the yard everyday and is crazy to go fishing..

Thanks in advance...

Those pics cannot be enlarged. Is there a "welch" plug on the motor, about the size of a quarter, it will have the model number on it. Will probably be on the top rear of the motor. Also have you tried changing the drain and vent screw gaskets, they are the number 1 spot for water intrusion, and should be changed every season with the lu oil.

Thanks Ezeke, I wished I would have come across that picture many weeks ago!!!

High Trim, there is nothing on the engine that tells me anything regarding model. Haven't tried changing the vent or drain screw gaskets but I have just added them to my list..

Another question, How difficult is that to change the lower unit seals and the vent and drain screw gaskets? Since I have done any work to this engine in a while, what else should I do to it to maintain it it tip top shape? I would like to take advantage that I working on it to do all the necessary things to it..

Thank you,

Changing the lower unit seals is easy enough, but it takes time and a couple special tools. The vent/drain screw seals are just plastic washers that go on before the screws. You would also need to replace the prop shaft seal, drive shaft seal, shift shaft seal, gear head seal and the spaghetti seal between the skeg and lower unit housing. If you decide to attack it yourself post back and we can guide you through it.
