I have a 1991 Johnson 115 and have been having tach problems. The tach has power, but doesnt register correctly. My first check was the regulator/rectifier and checked voltage at the battery cables, while disconnected from the battery. I am reading about 25 volts while hooked up directly to the cables and eliminating the battery. any advice? Also, if something had gone wrong with the regulator/rectifier, could that have fried my overheat warning horn, because it quit working at the same time. thank you for any advice.

Re: Johnson 115 high voltage

First If I understand you correct...DO NOT disconnect the battery to test while the engine is running! You will be buying a new powerpack if you do! You might get lucky once or twice...Dont do that!

Your problem looks like a classic case of the rectifier gone bad. It is connected electrically to the tach and does show up as the tach going crazy. Replace the regulator/rectifier and see what happens for this problem.

Do not disconnect the battery when engine is running as it can cause engine electronic components to fail due to the high voltages.

Hook the battery back up and hope it's ok.

Disconnecting the battery while running could lead to component failures unrelated to your initial problem.

Many times the outboard will charge at a rate higher than would be prefferred but without problems.
