Johnson 115 Tilt Trim / Mounting Screws Frozen

My 115 HP 1984 Johnson needs a new tilt trim motor. In taking the old motor off, one of the screw's cap broke off (liquid wrench wasn't much help) and I'm going to have to drill the rest of the screw out. But it looks like I don't have a proper angle for the drilling. Am I going to have to take the motor off the boat? Any suggestions for getting the tilt motor off?

A service manual will tell you how to dis-mount the TNT from the engine. I can't, while sitting here visualize how to remove that screw, and keep the drill going straight with the unit in place. Unless you can do it your self, I would take the pump unit to a machine shop. That motor has to bolt back down water tight. Don't even think about an easy-out here. Is there any of the broken bolt above the surface that you can get a hold of?

Thank you. There's nothing left to get a hold of the bolt. And right when it broke, I figured I was screwed. So I'm destined for a machine shop as you suggest. Regards!

The reason I suggest a machine shop is that is a stainless steel screw in aluminum. That screw is broken off in what is the entire pump, and valve casting which is not a cheap item. Even with the mean's to do a repair like that, it is not a while you wait job.

Onto your next step: It's hell driving the 3/4" stainless steel pins out to get the entire tnt off. I recomend drilling a 1/2" indent in the center of each stainless pin so you can hold a punch on center.
My punch bounced around a bit, peaning out the edges on the pin. I had to use a stone on a dremmel to shave the edges to get the pin through. I ended up using heat on the bottom, which in your case will wreck the internal seals.
The book says they'll slide right out. Must only happen when they're brand new.
