Hey Guys,

First time poster here.

The fuel primer choke solenoid has melted. I replaced it with a new one. After about an hour of running the vessel. It melted it again. Ive checked wiring, everything seems good. What would cause this to happen?

I will mention, previous owners tried to start it with ether and caused a small fire. I’ve checked for any damages and everything seems good.

The primer solenoid VALVE should only be energized for a few seconds for near instant starting of the motor.----Sounds like it was wired wrong.-----Should be easy to check out.

So if i understand it correctly. It should only have power if ignition is pressed in ie. “choke”? So not constant power.

I had to put a new ignition in, wondering if thats where i went wrong with wiring.

It should only be energized when key is pushed in while cranking it over.-----It is a VALVE that opens for cold starting.-----Fuel at pressure ( from fuel pump ) is sprayed directly into the air going into the motor.-----This fuel bypasses the carburetor bowl and metering circuits.-----If the previous owner had issues with this motor then do the following.------Post compression test values.----Spark should jump a gap of 3/8" or more on the 4 leads.-----Replace water pump impeller before launching the boat.----Have battery load tested.----Take starter apart for inspection , ohm test and perhaps new brushes.

Ive checked everything as you mentioned. All good, motor purrs like a kitten. I suspect this to be an electrical issue. I am getting a constant power to Fuel prime/cutoff valve. This causes it to get really hot and melt the inside. It makes a real mess. Right now i have the two wires that go to the valve un plugged. She still runs like a dream.

This primer valve is only used for starting !!---It does nothing when motor is running.------It is a wonderful ( much mis - understood piece ) that replaces choke flappers.
