Hello once again.
I have placed a couple of posts and have now come to the conclusion I need to do some drastic actions.
We had a terrible time getting back in to dry land a couple of weeks ago.

The Johnson 115 is sitting on a Mako 19 and have decided to do a complete overhaul of the whole setup.
What I am trying to determine is the cost effectiveness of a complete stripdown of the motor and rebuild. But how much is it worth doing. I cannot afford a new engine at over starting at $7000+.
How can I determine the year of the motor, there is just nothing on it that tells me. I figure I would pay around $1500 to $2000 for the complete rebuild which may or may not include rebore. At $80 ph.

Secondly, I have started the boat strip down which I will feature in another post and possibly many more with photos. The front deck is off aswell as all the foam out, weight wise in total about 150lbs in the front beck section alone.
T top and cc off. All cables and wiring out.

Any and all comments welcome.

thanks.

I've been in the same situation. You need to appraise the existing motor. You need to appraise the condition of the engine and lower end. Either, can be expensive to fix. If you repair it, will you be happy?. It will be a motor that burns a lot of gas and smokes.

In my case, the shops had quite a few take off motors that were in better shape. In one case, i was given two Johnson 115, just so the shop wouldn't have to take them to the landfill. One was good, the other not. Many take offs have problems, but a few are from people who just want a new, 4 stroke motor. Check the compression, and overall condition before paying for these used motors.

Being a scrounger, I've since switched to I/Os. The parts, whether new or used are plentiful and cheaper. That said, there is more maintenance to an I/O, especially if you're in an area that freezes.

The psi is 80 80 left side 85 90 right side.
Does not smoke a lot.
gears and shaft are good
Left side always cold. Right very hot.
Starts well and shifts well. Max WOT is onlt 4000 rpm
Just not happy with it .........it is the unknown. One day I fear it will let me down.
Fuel economy appears to be good,
Had really bad problems getting into port last time out. coughing and spluttering, cut out just as I got to the jetty. I was lucky to get back WOT was going down and down to the point of 2000 rpm and only 9 mph. Time for action me thinks.
I bought this for a bit of a bargain in my view, with the full knowledge of doing project, just not so soon, but oh well, it is going to be fun.

I have other work to do on the boat and rather than spend out over $7000 I would rather spread the load into the whole project.

I have got my budget, and whilst it is not a great amount it is certainly over enough to complete the project if I only spend MAX about $3000 on the engine rebuild. That leaves me about $5k for the rest and some change (ha Famous last words)

Is the id plate still affixed to the transom bracket? How about the silver disc on top of the powerhead near the lifting eye? Failing both of those.....some pics might assist us to tell you what you have.

I have a 1995 115 Evinrude with great compression, runs out great that I would sell you for $1500. If you are near Savannah GA, if not I am sure you can find one near you for about the same.
