I've just purchased a 1972 Johnson 125 HP and was told there's no tell tale or 'pee hole' on my engine, would anyone be able to confirm this ??

I didn't see one on the parts breakdown, I am not sure of the year when the factory installed them, but I think it was several years later. You could probably install one yourself.

There was no need for a tell tale back then.-----Folks replaced the impeller on a regular basis.------But a pressure gauge is a far better item to have than a tell tale.----There may be a fitting or a convenient spot to drill on the side of the #1 cylinder for easy fitting of a gauge.

There is a horn in the control that is supposed to go off if it overheats. Tell tale, gauge, horn, whatever, none will protect you if the impeller suddenly fails at high speed. It can destruct in seconds.

Not many folks know what the tell tale actually indicates.-----Not many folks monitor the tell tale while underway.----Seen many motors with tell tales overheated too.

Any operator staring at the Tel tale for failure instead of watching where the boat is going, could be facing major Legal Problems quickly.
A Pressure Gauge needs constant monitoring, as does a Temp Gauge. A Horn at least gets your attention right now, provided it didn't Scare you overboard. Used in conjunction with Temp and Pressure Gauges, and Tel tale would give a lot of info as to determine what the problem is, if there even is a problem
