Test compression or have motor checked on a dynomometer.--Going to 17" pitch will help a lot for getting up on plane , but may overspeed the engine.

thanks racerone for the quick and informative responce. just the kind of info i need,i need the help getting up really bad and once im on plane i usually run about 5000 rpms anyway.i checked comp not long ago ,if i remember correctly it was 3 cyl at 96 and 1 at 98 ,heads were changed to low compression heads at rebuild. i guess it might help some to get the correct heads. thanks for your help.:joyous:

Re: johnson 140 hole shot

The Ranger 330V has a hull that weighs less then 1100 lbs + fuel + accessories + battery (or more than one) + people. I would investigate the hull and make sure it is not hauling around about 6-700 lbs of water trapped in the flotation.

You are reaching optimum rpms with the 140 and if it was only firing on 3 cyl then the rpm would be about 1000 less (been there and done that..... I have the exact motor - same model and year)

What is the motor height in relation to the bottom of the boat? The Ranger's series like to have a motor riding high, a prop with lots of rake and you might even consider a different prop. Let's properly identify what you have first and see if it is properly cupped too.

Go ahead and check your compression, when were the carbs last completely rebuilt? Lets focus on the cheapest fixes first.

You should get it weighed and or do some investigating for wet foam. The easy way to do that is with 1/4" or 3/8" wooden dowels. A small hole is drilled into the deck to access the foam and the dowel is pushed in until it bottoms out and left to sit overnight. The next day pull the dowel and it will show if you have wet foam........ if the foam is wet then it has to be removed.......it will never dry out. If the dowels look like they are dry then close the drilled hole up with marine 2 part epoxy (Bondo makes it) or use PC-11 and you can even epoxy in a small piece of dowel to help plug the hole.

My attitude is do the cheapest first ;)

Great motor!

Oh yeah......and if you really want to run faster shop around for a 140 Looper (Post 1984) or a newer etec 135 and your boat will be running in the low 50's ......... it should be in the mid to high 40's now.

a 140 turning 5800 with a 19in prop will be going more than 37 mph. Unless the slip is around 30%

Re: johnson 140 hole shot

Is a 140 a 2:1 gear ratio, if so there's a lot of prop slip going by the numbers you put up.

19" Prop, 5800 RPM, 37 MPH, 2:1? Gear Ratio = 29% slip?

That could easily translate into a slow hole shot as well, is the prop in good shape?

Edit: We cross posted Jimmbo.

Bob VT will investigate the rake and cupping may be able to borrow a couple for testing. drilling a test hole in deck, where exactly would you drill? Carbs were done 1.5 yrs at rebuild . i really like the boat and motor good for an old coot who likes to fish:laugh:

Re: johnson 140 hole shot

Jimmbo thanks to you and Fed for the info on the 30% slip i assume not good and what can i do to improve slip. the prop has 2 or 3 little dings maybe 1/16 not bad . it has 3 (i think) of the vent holes no rubber plugs in them. dont know if that is bad. i want to thank all you guys for your help.

With those rpm and the weight of your hull My first guess is either extra water on board in the foam as Bob suggests or motor height, trim and weight distribution on board. That outfit should pretty much come out on plane quickly.

Agree with BobVT-check to be sure the engine is mounted properly on the transom. If it's too low, the anti-ventilation plate could be dragging in the water, causing huge water spray from the engine, lots of drag and poor performance. A stainless prop usually permits the engine to be mounted slightly higher on the transom and it still won't loose it's bite. (like an aluminum prop would.) That engine is propped correctly if it does 5800 rpm's at WOT. A prop change will either overspeed the engine or lug it.
