Johnson 140 rebuilt lower HELP!

Ok, I have a 1986 Johnson 140 and when I got the boat, the lower unit was cracked. I was able to find a rebuilt lower with the same size shaft so I bought it. Now that I am trying to re install, I cannot get the shift shaft to line up correctly. If I take the shift shaft and turn it all the way to where it would be at the lowest point and re install the drive, the shaft is about a quarter to half inch above the hole to put the screw in. I have tried to disconnect the shift cable side but it really is too long. And after a few times of installing and pulling this PITA drive, I am beat.

Any ideas?

By the way, this is the original shift shaft that came off of the original drive.

The shift shaft can not just be screwed into the lower unit.-----It must be adjusted to a predetermined height.

That and if its a pre 76 unit the height will never be right as shifting is reversed.....
