I have recently bought a Johnson 150GT 1988 model. I have tried to remove the prop and it won't come loose. Now I retired a few years ago as a mechanic so the stupid factor is less likely, although still a possibility:redface:. Obviously I removed the castle nut:). Everyone tells me theirs usually just pulls right off. I tapped mine with a wooden hammer but I am afraid to bang on it as it may damage the lower unit or shaft. Have you experieinced this issue and how did you solve it short of breaking something else.

Thanks up front for you helpful replies.

Ayuh,... If it was installed Dry, No Grease,...
It usually comes down to What part you want to destroy to get it off...

Corrosion is a real Problem...

Yea, I had hoped to avoid that. But.......

Thanks for your help though. I wish I had been there when it was put on!

Re: Johnson 150 GT 1988 Prop Removal

Calthegoose I had a very similar problem with my old boat. I even destroyed a puller trying to get it off. I did learn that a propane torch does not get hot enough to melt the rubber inside the prop hub though. If I had melted it then I could have had the prop rehubed, but oh no. I finally got frustraited enough that it is now in 11 pieces on the floor of my garage:mad:, new 4 inch angle grinder and metal cutting wheels works very well I found out:D. The prop shaft on my outdrive did not look like it had been greased ever and that sucked. If you cut it off be very careful and if you use heat be even more careful. You will need to keep the prop shaft cool if you use heat to melt the rubber in the hub but I know that it can be done.

Thanks to all for your help. I think I'll spend the money I don't have on a dealer removal. Hopefully they can get it off without too much destruction.

You folks are great, glad I joined. :)
