I just put a 1981 Johnson 150 outboard on a 72 starcraft holiday. It is currently running a 14" 21 pitch stainless 3 blade propeller. I am only pulling 3800 RPM, should be around 5200. I have been doing some research (online and talking to the local boat shops) and believe that I should drop down to a 15 or 17 pitch. Anyone out there know where to pick up used propellers for test runs. I would like to hold on to as much $$ as possible to purchase a new propeller once I know which pitch is working out best. Last note, I am running lakes at 6000 to 8000 feet above sea level.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

5700 would be a good target RPM for your 150. 17P won't get you that at 6-8000ft elevation. I'd say with some certainty that a 15P in alum will be as close as possible without changing anything else such as jets, eng height etc.....
