I am doing this for someone so I dont know what the model number is but I know that it is a 1989 johnson 150. It was not running right so he took it to the shop and the man change all most all the electric things on the motor. They change the power pack, stator, rectifier, spark plugs, checked for spark on all plugs. He got it back and took it to the lake and it ran better than it has in a long time but one day it started some problems. He got home checked the motor and seen where the man did not tie down the stator wire so some had been cut. He spliced them back togeather. NOW the boat will not idle. You can get it to go by raising the rpms and put it in gear before it dies but then the boat will not get up on plain. It gets to about 2800 rpms and stops. Take the boat out of water and tottle it up and it will go over 2800rpm and you can let it stay at about 2500rpm for how ever long but once you tottle down to idle it cuts off. One more thing we took all the gas out and tried new gas. If anybody knows anything the help will be greatful THANK YOU VERY MUCH

Re: Johnson 150 Idle problems

its not firing on all the cylinders, you can find the dead one by examining the sparkplugs, it should be obvious. or just check with a timing light.
Examine the coil, swap it with one that is firing, if the problem remains and doesn't follow the coil then it could be they power pack was damaged along with rectifier when the wires were cut.

Only way to know for sure is get a peak reading meter off ebay,

And order the factory manual ( not seloc or clymer) and do the tests from the book, its cheaper than throwing parts at it or paying good money for shoddy work.
www.outboardbooks.com

Its also possible the stator fried due to being disconnected.
The manual contains all the tests for those components.
