I have 1983 Johnson 150 (J150TLCTE) I developed a loud bang or kick in the lower unit in reverse only it actually feels like the engine is hitting a tree stump or submerged object and it kicks or bangs.Forward gear is fine I can run it forward all day long. the higher the RPMs the more it happens in reverse only.I disconected the cables and shift manually in water still dose the same thing.with motor not running when i put it into reverse manually and grab the prop its spins the motor.I pulled the lower unit and checked the shift rod for my motor 20" shaft its 22 1/16 +- 1/32. Thought it might be the "clutch dogs" - Anyone have any ideas??? Also, if its clutch dogs, are they hard to replace.is it easier to buy another unit I read the secret files and it states 79 to 91 should fit as long as the shaft is same size.if its a longer shaft I guess I'll have to switch shafts.any help would be appreciated Thanks

Sounds like a bad clutch dog and reverse gear.

I pulled everything apart and everything looks ok both forward and reverse gears were the clutch dog sit are still nice and 90*cut.the clutch dog on the reverse side look a little rounded.front looks 90* sharp edge no rounding on dog.I'm sitting here looking at the gear fluid the guy gave me to change the lower end fluid it's super tech sae 80-90 gl-5 gear fluid could this be to heavy.can I just change the clutch dog.I also did some gear numbers checking the rear gear is 910211 the clutch dog is 910198 and forward gear is 324411 and pinion has no number could this be the problem

It is quite easy to replace the clutch dog. If there is rounding then the beast may be jumping out of gear. Look carefully at the gear also. If the clutch is damaged the gear may be also. You can usually find a good used set on the net. Take care that you get the correct clutch and gear. There are three tooth and five tooth if my memory serves.
80/90 is good.

Silly question here, but is your shift rod height correct? Mine bucked like that and I adjusted it down (or up....can't remember) and it fixed itself. Just wanted to mention it if it's something that simple. The farthest I've ever gone into the lower unit is pulling the bearing carrier and changing the seals.

Once those gears jump the dogs are rounded off and need to be replaced. If they aren't to far gone adjusting may help.

The gearcases should swap. They are both the 20" shaft version. If you do decide to replace the reverse gear, it's superceded to 437297 and is a Bombardier stock item. That part number includes the reverse gear and the clutch dog.

You replacing or repairing? If replacing, I have a nice freshwater unit that I want to move real bad...:D

Re: Johnson 150 kicks in reverse

So the new gears and clutch dog went to the 6 slot instead of the 3 slot
