Hi,

I want to change the gear oil in the leg. There is no outboard shops where I live and I do all my own maintenance. I want to replace the oil in the gearbox. What oil should I replace it with. Is there a automotive oil that is compatable?

Thanks

The 'spec' is 80/W90 gear oil, but the oil used in drives and outboards have a better 'moisture abortion'.
Any brand will do.
They are mostly sold as 'Hi-vis' oil.
On that engine OMC/BRP recommends a semi-synthetic or synthetic oil.

Use a marine gear oil. You should find this at some auto parts stores, marine stores or perhaps at a Walmart. The OEM does recommend synthetic, and I would use it if you can find some. Buy a qt as you will need 25+ oz.

Most changes require less than 32 oz. Couldnt find your in a quick search but buy the good stuff. When you tear off the seal the oil should be "stringy" and pull out like a spider web.

Gears like that:)

And it's only about $9.00 a quart.

Don't forget to buy the pump too or you'll have a heck of a time trying to get it in that little hole, and always replace the seals on the drain plugs to prevent water intrusion.
