Hi all.. This morning while fishing my pull start broke. I'm not sure exactly what broke but it wont rewind the cord. I can hand turn in back on and it starts fine, but still won't rewind the cord. How should I go about fixing this and what parts do I need to get in order to fix it. It is a mid eighties motor if that helps at all

Thanks
Caleb

You can get the year based on your model number from http://web.archive.org/web/20011223003042/www.evinrude.com/docktalk/modref/jomodyr/JHP15.html. Then go to the BRP parts catalog at http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e. Choose Johnson, the year, then the HP, then choose, I think the powerhead and starter group. Should give you the OMC part number of probably a spring. You might consider getting a manual from www.kencook.com if you plan to keep the motor.

Re: Johnson 15hp pull start

awesome thank you, I found out it is a 1985 and I ordered the spring. Now I have a feeling I have to preload the spring in order to get it to fit back into the metal base before reinstalling it, and tips or tricks in installing the spring into that holder and back into place? Looks easy enough but any advice I can get is great!

thanks again

Re: Johnson 15hp pull start

I replaced mine last winter after it also broke. It's very easy, all you do is wrap it back into the cup but pay attention to the old ones orientation (where it starts, and direction) before releasing it. Do it outside, not in the kitchen as I did as it's got grease on it and is a tad messy.
Once assembled, put a bolt with nut on the assembly to keep it all together before reassembling onto the outboard.
