Johnson 175 lower seal rebuild

I have a surplus Johnson Lower that I want to rebuild and sell to finance another project. I bought a boat with a bad motor that died when one of the carburetors got fouled with Eco-Gas. I kept the lower as a spare because it fit my existing outboard. It has been in the attic for 10 years.

I believe it came off of a 1998 Johnson 175 V6 carbureated engine.

The large O ring in the hub is leaking. I want to replace the seals so that the unit is ready to use by the next owner.

I am attaching some detail photos in hopes that someone can help me verify the model so I can get the right parts. I am also looking for some info on replacing the seals.

Thanks

John

Just to do the large o ring?

Simple, remove the two cap screws that hold the keepers in place. Remove the keepers. Thread in a length of 5/16"?18 threaded rod into the two holes. Put your puller over the rods and remove bearing carier. Replace o ring and reassemble. Incredibly simple.

Thanks Jakedaawg, do I need to have the shifter in a certain position, or will the gears and prop shaft remain in place?

They should remain in.place. reverse gear will come out with carrier..just seat it all back into place with a leather mallet. Coat bearing carrier surface with permatex form a gasket. Not the part that will contact l.u. fluid. Just the outside edge surfaces between housing and carrier. Seat it with a soft mallet.reinstall keepers. Use a little blue thread lock at the threads and permatex at the heads.
