Hi I have a 1961 18hp Johnson outboard. Model number fd-15-f. This moter was on my boat when I bought it. It has electric start but doesn't seem to be hooked up so I've been using the pull start. The front panel says to put motor in neutral to start but there is no shifting mechanism on the motor itself. I can only assume that there used to be controls for the motor. The motor is in forward gear. What i need to know is will i be able to start the motor with it in gear with the pull start without having the controls ?

Should be a shift lever on the starboard side of the motor - forward-neutral-reverse. You can pull-start it in forward, but be careful the motor doesn't take off and dump you overboard. Is the shift lever missing? If so, search for one on Ebay or go to AOMCI.org and post a free want-ad on their classifieds.

There should be a button on the front lower port side just below the cowl that will ground the ignition out to kill the motor.
