Johnson 1959 CD-16 Controls

Has anyone out there ever connected this vintage motor (or one similiar) to mechanical throttle/shift controls?

I'm using it as a kicker on a jet boat so I know some mods will need to be made. I believe I have a steering lever figured out that will connect the main jet nozzle steering lever to the main steering wheel. I didn't want to invest the big bucks in an electro type throttle control and I'm not even sure it would fit this older type of engine.

See attached pics to understand what my connections look like. This engine had a total rebuild this past year and runs like a new one. It also helped me troll over and catch several mid-30s muskies, 2-40s and for my dad a 46" muskie :)

Thoughts on what would be needed and where to purchase are appreciated!

You just need the connection kit from Evinrude for older style external shift and throttle controls. Throttle side is easy as your anchor point is already there and the cable end point is the part you underlined in your inset. The shift side is a bit more difficult, as the anchor point on the larger models is part of the belly pan support. The pan "floats" on rubber mounts, so anchoring to the pan is iffy due to the possibility that the anchor point would move a little in relation to the shift handle. Might be able to use it, but just watch for how much the belly pan moves around. The anchor point would be the square about 5-inches fore of the shift handle.

Anyway, if you go to shop.evinrude.com you should be able to find the kit for similar motors - the 18hp from the late 1960s uses the same clips.

I appreciate the advice.

I went to the Evinrude website shop.evinrude.com you mentioned and can't seem to find any info on the control connections for a 1968 18hp?

Any other thoughts or generic part numbers, etc are appreciated.

When you go to the shop evinrude site, click on electronic parts catalog. Then click the down arrow where it defaults to Evinrude, and select OB Accessories. I think the oldest they go is about 1972, but that's good enough. Navigate to the single engine remote control page and you will see the cable locks.

NOW...the above advice is good, but for your CD you need an adapter for the shift cable lock. You can't just put the cable lock on the belly pan. The adapter puts the location up where it needs to be. Sorry, I can't give you the part number. You will have to find a 1959 Johnson accessories catalog for that. Good luck finding the part even then.

Look at the block in the foreground of this photo - its in front of the shift lever. This is what you need to mount to the lower cowl pan of your motor. The retainer clip for the shift cable is then mounted on it.

Thanks for the comments and pics everyone. The motor was my dad's - he bought it new - used it for about 50 hours (50 years ago) and then stored it in his garage. Compression was great, so I just changed all the electricals, fuel line, water pump, and gaskets/seals and she purrs like a new one. Runs all day on 2.5 gallons of gas.

So, I'm sure I figure all this out one I did into it, but pics sure do help. I can weld/fabricate, so I know making or finding the parts won't be a problem. Currently, the twist grip seems a like there is more resistance than I would like and I know it's no the grip linkage, but rather how it has to move the electricals for the timing and advance the carb. This seems like it might be a problem for the throttle cable to handle one it is connected - we'll see. I understand how the cable can pull the throttle, but does it have a spring that assists the return - or how does that work?

BTW - Does anyone have a pic of how the trottle connection might look like? I figuring to use Teleflex 3300 or some type of universal cable, and I see West Marine has lots of different ball/socket type connections. I was to have a seperate throttle/shift for the kicker - will see with a link bar from the jet which I can fab...

BTW - here's a pic of this crazy boat. It even has a microwave for those cold fishing days in the spring/fall here in Ohio...

The control that I directed you to on the BRP site is the best one for that motor. The connections to the motor are super simple. Used ones are easy to find, since there were so many of them made. New cables are available here at iboats.

Remove the twist grip from the tiller and you will find a friction cone inside. You may have to give it a whack on the table top to dislodge it, but it is up in the end of the grip. Remove that cone, but leave the spring in, and reinstall the grip. It will turn much easier. The friction cone is to make it stay where you put it when running without remote controls.

Finally, the control cable is a push-pull cable. Pushes to open the throttle and pulls to close it. No rocket science there.
