Hi guys.... well heres my latest problems...... After getting fed up with this motor, 1972 johnson 50 hp, having changed the flywheel key, stater, coils, fuel pump, rebuilt carbs 3 times it still wouldnt run well... sluggish and hard to start on the water.... When it did run it was really good. like a scalded dog...
But it was few and far between .. well I put on a 30hp johnson... same problem.... So now crying... what had i done.... or not done. The motoer ran great until on the boat.... then i realised i was using the same fuel line from the tank. Turns out that the inline fuel filter. replaced twice by this idiot... had a small hole near the fuel tank side in the fitting wher it screwed in... replaced and this motor runs wonderfully....
But anyway.... long winded I know.. heres finally the question..... The starter on the 50 was loose. I tightend it and realised that two of the starter bolt mounts are cracked. they were filled with what looks like that jb weld stuff. I was wondering if its possible to actually weld the mounts. problem is there isnt much left .... the starter was held on primarily by one bolt and the other two covered with JB weld .. paintd black to look like the engine block.... Any ideas on how much a welder would charge, if they can weld two threaded rods to the block where the mounts have crumbled.

Thanks
tony

A good welding shop should be able to weld the cracks in the starter bracked. As for the other part, they could possible build up the area in question, then you can re-drill and tap the holes. Would be stronger than new. If not too bad, a HeliCoil could be installed.
Good luck and keep us posted
