Johnson 1979 70hp Holes in gearbox!!!

Hi All,Can anyone tell me if, on the gearbox looking from the rear of the engine on the r/h side,if there should be 2 holes,1 just above the curved bit,that the prop shaft runs inside,and one nearer the front just below the cavitation plate.They are perfectly round about 5-6mm in diameter,which suggests there a drilling of some kind.I had the engine laid down and when i put it on my stand gear oil started coming out of these,so i guess they either shouldn't be there or there's a seal gone,i hoping it's the later,Many thanks in anticipation Phil

likely water drain holes for the mid-section. The oil you see is likely unburned 2-stroke oil, not gear oil....

Thank's for that,but it definitely smells like gear oil,i guess i'll have to strip it to be sure!

post some pics before fixing a problem that may not exist.
