I would like to check my idle timing. Does anyone know if J70ELCRD has "quick Start"

Thank you.

Thank you. Originally this motor would not take fuel well. If I had to idle through a no wake zone then load the boat on a trailer the motor would die when trying to accelerate. Because of this I cleaned the carburetors, rebuilt the primer solenoid and changed the fuel lines. These changes did help some but I still had a problem with the motor dying when trying to accelerate from an idle. I then removed the Reed valves and replaced them. Now the motor is not idling well but seems to take fuel much better after taking off. It is idling too low. You have to advance the throttle (open the butterfly) to keep the motor running. Once the motor takes off it runs well.

I though it would be smart to check the idle timing. After syn the carbs per the manual and then aligning the throttle cam with the cam follower I decided the check the idle timing. I placed the cable on the number one cylinder(top) Set the light to 2 stroke and then advanced the cam follower until it just touched the the line on the throttle cam. I then tried to read the timing but it seemed to be all over the place.

Before this, I found tdc on the fly wheel. I didn't have a piston stop so I just took the spark plugs and turned it upside-down in the number one cylinder then rotated the flywheel clockwise slowly until the piston came into contact with the plug. I remove the plug and the repeated the same process on the other side of tdc. I measured the distance between the marks and went halfway between them. The flywheel was marked tdc.

I have also checked cylinder pressure. All good.

I replaced all coils(84 year motor) and replaced the cdi at some point because it went bad.

Anyone have any ideas.

Post your compression numbers .----A good motor would show about 135 / 140 PSI.

Why do you care about idle timing? Set your idle to specified RPM and the timing takes care of itself.

The boat will not idle. If the timing is normal I can mark that off the list. You suggest that I adjust the throttle cam on the on the throttle link until the boat idles correctly without checking time? Can I damage

Facts you need to believe / understand.-------You check / set maximum timing advance !!----Idle timing is the point where throttle plates open up.------Actual timing at smooth idle does not matter and looks after itself.-----Note------Motor has to be in good condition ( proper spark / clean carburetors / good cylinder condition / good crankcase compression) or no amount of fiddling / adjusting will get proper results !

The motor is in good condition. I have examined each cylinder with an adjustable spark tester. All cylinders are within specifications. I just recently rebuilt the carburetors. The compression is adequate. Im not sure there is anything else to check besides the timing. If you have no ideals I can take to a mechanic. I'm just looking for an outside opinion. Thanks.
