My PTT has failed. Having trouble removing entire unit. Two bars holding unit seem frozen. Sheer force?
And where to get a replacement unit? Like rebuilt, kits for rebuilding, new? I have searched the web for Johnson Power Tilt units and found only a few hits available on Ebay.

Surely this is a common problem. The hydraulic motor casing is made of steel and completely rusted thru. Strange for an item below the water line.

You should be able to replace the motor without removing the unit from the boat.

The first question is:
Do you have the proper repair manual for you model motor?

post the model #, I thought by 95 all had the fas trac single bar type unit. the double bar was mostly just used on the 225. a picture would be even better. the bracket design pretty much precludes an easy way to remove the trim motor only if its the older double bar design.

Tilt the motor all the way up and set on tilt locks. You probably have to use the manual release to raise the motor by hand. Remove the top pin from the tilt ram and you should be able to rotate the whole unit out from the top far enough to get to the tilt motor bolts.

Don't know the model number, just the engine serial number (J200TXEO) whose last letters (EO) are decoded to mean "95", as in 1995. That date also corresponds to the bill of sale for the motor. I'm not the original owner of either the boat or motor.
There are three hydraulically actuated bars that are activated by the hydraulic pump: a long and large tee shaped one that is pinned to the motor (center) and two on either side of the central one.
I could post a picture if you like.
The bracket design absolutely precludes removal of the motor without removal of the entire unit. So I'm trying to get the whole unit off.
Two bars hold it in place: one holding the tee shaped piston and mounted to the underside of the engine and the other (below) that allows the whole unit to rotate (slightly) as the engine moves up and down.
Thanks for your prompt reply.

The motor is inaccessible for removal w/o removing the entire power unit.
Don't have a manual yet, but thinking about it
thanks for the prompt reply
skillet doctor

Re: Johnson 1995 200 power tilt unit removal

I did just as you suggested: manual release, tilt all the way up, supported the engine so it wouldn't come crashing onto my hands/head, et cetera. The top pin will not budge. I think I'll try some penetrating oil (wintergreen), let it sit for a while and hammer again. It is now obvious that the whole unit comes out if I remove both the top and bottom pins.
Thanks for your helpful hints.

Like Walker said above, if you are able to remove the top tilt pin that goes through the top of the tilt ram, the whole unit should rotate far enough to get to that 3rd PITA screw holding the motor on.
Good luck.

Dave

I did a V-6 today and you really need a torch loaded with Mapp gas to heat the Alum. You have about 30 seconds to work before it will tighten up again.Spray penetrating fluid followed by Tri-Flow,LDS, or any foaming type penetrant that will suck the fluid into the hot seams.
Be sure to heat the area around the pin ,but not the pin directly.
You can loosen the motor from the transom and leave the steering, etc hooked up while supporting the skeg with a good floorjack and several friends.Bolt a sturdy 2 x 12x ? to the bracket opposite the trim motor to support it to the ground if you dont have a rafter or hoist to hang it.
Goodluck!
TM

Maybe a stupid question but I gotta ask it. Did you remove the snap rings on the top pin before you tried driving it out. Also try driving it out from both sides. Sometimes its easier to drive out from one side or the other.
