let me preface this by saying I know i should get a SELOC manual for this motor, but I am going to be selling the boat next spring so I figured it wasn't worth it.

With that said, I began work to winterize my boat yesterday and the trim was not working at all, either way. The engine started and ran fine, but I can't raise or lower it. Last time I took it out was about a month and a half ago and everything worked fine. I've been reading through other threads with similar issues and noticed alot of people recommending to try the trim switch under the cowling. Can anyone point me to this switch, I can't seem to find anything. Checked hydro fluids and it's full. No noise or anything when I hit the switch at the controls.

My '98 Johnny 150V6 has a PTT switch in the port side of the cowling base. You might see if the PTT relays are getting power from the control PTT switch.

You didn't blow the main fuse?

Under the cowling at the back of the motor is the black trim and tilt box with the relays inside, right under that box there should be a connector of the blue and green wires; disconnect that connector and make sure the contacts are clean and making good contact; I use battery cleaner to clean any corrosion out. Also, on the port side beside the starter is a fuse connection; make sure this fuse is not blown. Good Luck.

Thanks for the replies. Main fuse is intact and fine. The engine will start, just no trim. I pulled the plug coming from the trim/tilt box apart as well and all connections were clean and free of corrosion. Reconnected and still no luck. I do see some sort of plastic lever just above the trim motor that it on a spring. Not sure what that does but moving it does not help at all, and it seems like if that were the trim switch it'd be a good way to get your fingers chopped off. Model number on this is J130TXAUM. I can't find any sort of switch at the engine for the PTT.

Plastic lever is for the trim indicator guage which if you have one will be on the console; has no effect on the t/t operation. You apparently have no power going into the t/t junction box to operate the relays. Someone should chime in with a schematic on the electrics for the t/t. I am not computer literate enough to get one on here.

When you activate the t/t switch can you hear the relays clicking on the mtr ? If you can get some jumper wires and run 12 volts to the green and blue wires that come directly from the t/t mtr and see what happens.

I figured that plastic lever was for something like that.

Boobie, there is absolutely no noise when I activate the switch in either direction. No clicking, nothing at all. I'm thinking the motor could be burnt out, but I have had nothing to even signal it was going bad. Last time I took it out for almost 8 hours with zero issues. Now all of the sudden it doesn't work at all. It's puzzling.

Read post #6 again. Doing this will tell you if it is the t/t mtr or something in the boat/mtr wiring. Put 12 volt pos to blue wire and 12 volt neg to green wire. Mtr should trim up. Reverse wires for down.

Re: Johnson 1997 130 HP trim/tilt issue

i am guessing that he is not getting power to the switch. Since he does not hear relays click then the failure ii on the control side. Since it is in both directions then you back up to the single point of failure.

it could be the 12v going into switch
it could be the switch.
it could be the common ground for relay control (relay pin #85 or 86 depending on boat)

it could be other stuff, but this would be my list of most likely suspects - in decreasing order.

If it was mine I'd check the mtr first and go from there. It's not that hard to do and would point you in the right direction. Problem is, I'm not there to hear the relays.

Re: Johnson 1997 130 HP trim/tilt issue

I'm going to stop at the shop today and pick up jumper wires to run direct to the motor from the battery. Thank you for all the advice and I will keep you all up to date as to what my resolution is.
