Hello i just picked up a Johnson 2 hp that runs good. I plan on new points and a water pump soon. The water pump spits out some water like a mist. It looks like the johnsons outboards 2 hp on Youtube, the same amount of water, really not to much. Is that normal?? engine runs good but just want to check. thanks john

Ok John this is a good question. Start motor in clean garbage can or tank. Fill it up to above impeller housing, they are not self priming. Start outboard and allow to warm up. While engine is warm, being careful, you should be able to hold your hand on powerhead for 10 to 15 seconds without being burned. Approximately 140 to 160% Fahrenheit.

if you dont know how long that pump has been there, replace the impeller, its a much cheaper part (20$ ish?)....than a powerhead. basic maintenance!

The majority of water exits with the exhaust below the waterline. The small holes on the leg spit water as a telltale.

Hello, i read the other post about the water cominng out of my engine. Not to sure what non-self priming is??? My engine is a 1986,hardly used, runs good.I am running it in a barrel of cool water. I put my hand on i believe the exhaust plate on the powerhead for about 3 seconds and that was all i could do.I may try to find an infer red heat detector to check engine temp. Just a neat little engine and want to keep it running . Can you tell me more about non-self priming? thanks john

"Non self priming" means that the intake and pump must be filled with water for the pump to work. Practically, that means that the motor leg must be submerged to a few inches above the anti-ventilation plate. The anti-ventilation plate is the "fin" above the propeller. If the pump is run without water intake, the rubber impeller in the pump will be destroyed within a minute or so. And of course, the engine will overheat shortly thereafter.
