johnson 20 bacfires n no start.

it is a 1985 ,had it running in bay the other day.shut it down to do some fishing,would not start.had a few hrs of rowing to do.got it home checked fuel systems ,its ok checked coils.they are getting a spark( white),and after i pull a few times it backfires.will not start?when it was running i took the plugs off the coils,top one wntd to die when off ,bottom one nothing.any help is appreciated i hv a fishing tournament on thursday

also when takin plugs out i noticed gas on plug in only 1 cylinder..

To get to the problem you should start by doing a carb clean and kit, clean it twice,then try starting it

sounds like no fire on bottom cylinder..swap top coil to bottom...bottom coil to top..and if they reverse themselves..your bottom coil may be defective..I'd suggest you make sure your coil grounds and powerpack ground are clean and tight...I'd also unplug each amphenol plug and make sure no pins are pushed up or not making good contact.."I checked the coils and they are getting a spark.." is kinda confusing...how did you determine this?..just checked the diagram for a 1985 20 hp. at shop.evinrude.com...before switching coils, just switch the sparkplug leads and determine if that makes a difference

i had checked plugs for spark.sorry.i laid it on head and pulled.i had it running yesterday while at home and pulled plug off top.quit running,pulled off bottom.still ran.shut it off to switch them and i havent been able to get it to start for some reason.switched em bak and still cant start.i pulled the connector for power pak cleaned and inspected them with alcohol.they are even n look ok.
