1989 johnson 200 that is bogging down and won't get over about 25 mph on a 19' center console at wot. carbs maybe? it had a little water in the tank and i was advised to put some rubbing alcohol in it to break down the water for use. i changed the screw in transom mount filter and plugs after the bogging incident. i removed the inspection plate and the float to put in a pump and remove as much of the old contaminated gas as i could. apparently it still had some. will the alcohol assist in the water removal and how many times should i change the filter to protect the motor? thanks for the continued support!

If the fuel tank has/had water in it, removing the gas from the tank is the best option. I've never really heard of dumping alcohol in a tank before.....course I don't know it all.... :)

Most definetly, change the fuel filter.

Couple things to look at/do...each float bowl has a drain plug on it, drain each float bowl before pumping in new gas. Be aware of any sediment that may come out. A white rag under the drain hole will help you see any. If you do see any sediment, I would suggest removing the carbs and cleaning them and installing new kits.

The plastic float bowls do have a tendency to warp and leak. pressurize the system with the primer bulb and check the float bowls are not leaking around the float bowl gasket.

Make sure each carb throttle plate is opening. You can see this easy enough with the carb cover off.

Check your fuel lines. Replace any that have become hard. These lines tend to lose their grip on connection points and suck air.

How old is the VRO pump? Does it have a VRO2 tag on it and have a four wire harness?

If there is still doubts as to wether or not the tank still has water in it, you can hook up a portable tank with fresh fuel to the engine and see if it makes a difference.

Rubbing alcohol is not dry gas, so it won't do the same thing as dry gas since it already has water in it. The idea is explained in this article: web page

Thought to add that a water-separating fuel filter is a good investment for your boat.
