In my opinion it's reputation preceeds it, Go to www.google.com
and do a search using FICHT problems, Johnson problems, or Evinrude problems.... you'll be busy reading for days

Recheck the model number but it may be 200VXSS. They are good motors IF set up properly and maintained. Thats true with any motor today.

The gears may be suspect but if you get the serial number a dealer can tell you what warranty work has been done to it.

The set up is the key!

Good luck!

Re: JOHNSON 200 YEAR 2000

Oddly enough, I have that engine, I think. It's a 2000, OMC 200 hp long shaft Ocean (white paint) model.
I did have a power pack problem in the first year, which was covered under warranty by Bombardier who, as you know, has taken over the brand. Other than that, it's done everything I've asked, and gets better than expected fuel milage (I expected horrible milage and it's merely really thirsty). It's a carb engine, so the Ficht problems Evinrude had are irrelevant.
I'd have a dealer check it out, and if it's a good price, you should have something that will run forever. Our local Coast Guard uses them on two of their boats, and they prefer them to Mercury....but I'm not trying to get anything started here!

I have a 200HP Johnson Ocean Pro, mdl #200VXSS. Have never had a problem with it. Perform normal maintenance myself, ie" spark plugs, de-carbonizing, lower unit oil change, etc.

Lotsa people like to bash Johnson, I have no idea why. This is my second one, had a 70hp before back in the late eighties, ran with no problems too.

Kindest regards,

-Will in Maryland
