I recently removed my lower unit to replace impellar and forgot to adjust shift rod height, so the reverse is not engaging properly. When I put the lower unit back on I tightened the shift rod bolt to tight and twisted the head off. I don't think it will be hard to tap out but there is very little room to reach it. Can I loosen the lower cowl to make room?? I do not want to remove the carbs & intake unless needed. Any advice greatly appreciated.:D

Re: johnson 200hp lower cowl removal help needed

Removing the lower cowl is a simple task.
The lower cowl sits on 4 rubber isolators. On 2 of them you will find retaining clips on on each side. You will need to remove the port side clip to take that side off. There are three (i think it's three) bolts that need to be removed, one in front near the latch, one in the back and one underneath. Once all that is removed lift the wiring harness and fuel line out of the cowl and pull the cowl towards you.
If you go to shop2.evinrude.com and pull up the parts diagram for for your engine you will see how it comes apart.
