johnson 20hp runs them pops...help

had my 20hp out a few times and all of the sudden when i oen it up and go for a while , <br />every once in a while it acts like it hits something , like a log or stick in the water. <br /><br />the boat jerks a little, and then it runs ok for a while, and then it does it again, every so offen.<br /><br />What causes this?<br /><br />uneven gas flow?<br /><br />electrical fouling out maybe?<br /><br />Thanks...

From what you describe, I'd guess the dog gear in the lower unit is slipping. Another possibility is a mis adjusted gear shift linkage not allowing the gears in the lower unit to mesh.

1 guess is clutch dog. need more info, is this tiller control, what model, has the lower unit been off.

sounds like it might be missing, like from a lean condition...<br />My evinrude 20 is doing this at idle - I bought a carb kit for it.
